From Challenges to Opportunities through Remote Working

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced us into lock-down. Many of us have had to stay at home and work remotely. It’s a new practice for most of us so let’s examine some of the challenges and how to overcome them. The atmosphere of working remotely is hugely different from that in traditional offices. How can we discover ways to sustain self-discipline and productivity?

Here are some tips:

Environment: If home is the one place we have to spend our day in, it is essential to separate the working space from our chilling space to avoid anxiety. It’s best to prepare an office or a spot in the house that is isolated from any distraction. This will help us to focus on an appropriate working mode. Best we do not work in the bedroom or the living room because we need these spaces to relax and do other activities.

Habits: If we are used to working in an office it will be helpful to replicate our habits there, such as dressing up, taking lunch and coffee breaks in much the same way as we do in the workplace, and communication with our colleagues.

Establish a good communication system: To replicate the office space, we might need several channels such as WhatsApp, Skype, email, and Slack. If our job description requires us to get requests from managers, workmates and clients, we might need to make our list of tasks clear to our manager to avoid pressure and be able to prioritize all tasks.

Rules, Regulations, and Expectations: Freedom needs restrictions. High flexibility could give us hard times if we are not sure what is expected of us during work time. A clear channel should be defined between each of us and our managers to receive tasks and accomplish them within given deadlines. Policies will help us all to know how to meet expectations and to sustain self-discipline.

Time management: The goal is to get things done. Working at home from 8am to 5pm, as in an office, may not be the best way to do this. If we know what is required and expected of us, we should be able to achieve in our own choice of time. Keeping a log of everything we are doing through the day, from week to week, is a good practice.

Tracking of Projects: It’s important to establish some kind of traceable mechanism to enable everyone to see what we are doing to avoid duplication of work and unnecessary requests for clarification. Here are some suggestions for tracking systems:

  • Monthly log: This captures our communications as an employee with any client. It’s good for reference when clients get in touch with new or modified proposals.
  • Projects status: this track elaborates the current stage of every project.
  • Financial record
  • Referencing of invoices

Regardless of the challenges that we might be facing, working remotely has advantages. We can welcome the chances for new learning and a growing appreciation of the benefits of flexibility and adaptability.
